their helpfulness is one of the virtue that i admire.
during our japan trip, even the passers-by were more than willing to show us the way, very patiently with a smile.
this time, it's really 患难见真情。

and this made me wonder.
will things be like this too if it were to happen to us?

I wonder: Is it possible that such events serve to remind the country of the transience of life, and hence are one reason why the Japanese are as restrained and go-with-the-flow as they appear? Can such traits, then, translate into building blocks of resilience?

Ultimately, do such disasters inure a people to the prowess of Mother Earth, resulting in an admirable unified resilience?

I liken Japanese people to bamboo. Zen teaching extols the plant’s flexibility... how it imparts extraordinary strength and endurance. See, the bamboo never snaps when subjected to force. Rather, it sways and bends. And goes with the flow - and springs back, unafraid of adversity.

And if going with the flow helps one to better deal with external circumstances and events beyond his control, how can it be a negative trait?

looking at my results for the past 3 semesters.
accounting and finance screwed me upside down.
and there's managerial accounting next semester! \:

looking at this semester's subjects, i don't think i'm gonna do fantastic either.
travel&leisure test worth 25% is gonna be duper bad cos i know it.
oh well, just hope that everything's not gonna be as bad.
meanwhile, there're still 2 hr papers next week to save a bit of my ass.

i guess the quote of no one get lefts behind (mrs woo, for 3h in 2005) is no longer valid, only back in those days when i had awesome people motivating and inspiring me.
i don't have enough strength to push myself on afterall.
i only have myself to catch up with others, no one is going to wait for me.

i really hate this feeling.
it's gonna be there forever, it's hard to forget.

Day 2 - 25th December 2010 (X'mas)
Osaka - Tokyo: Shinjuku, Shibuya

he was laughing at us while we were trying to read the flavours which were in jap.
we got stuck with one and he explained what it was to us in english.

we had a lot of tickets as souvenirs by the end of the trip cos we missed some trains we reserved seats for. \:

i need to find a part-time job this holiday to get by.
no more full-time temp jobs cos i need a break before internship starts.
didn't had any break last year since i worked office hours during both holidays.
(worth it though, all well-spent and well-rewarded for japan trip)

day 2. shinkansen ride to tokyo.

day 3. in tokyo.

day 5. met up with fumiya who brought us around nagoya!

met up with the section at night for dinner!

day 6. kyoto - arashiyama, beautiful place.

day 7. went to nagoya alone to meet fumiya again.

day 8. osaka.

2010 had been a fruitful and awesome year!
mmm IV - another imba band experience and meeting the people we met 2 years ago, feels so good to see them again (and again in december)! :D
syog - glad i was a volunteer and got the role of liaison officer. there were many culture exposures and i met many new people.
japan trip - a trip 1/3 sponsored and itinerary self-planned. it was a great experience getting lost and finding our way around. some sort of independence training.

i know 2011 is gonna pass very quickly.
with 1/4 of the year spent on internship.
and most probably no time for travelling. (no money too!!!)
another thing, i think i'm addicted to travelling.

on a side note, i need to focus on my japanese this year.
i'm freaking scared now after the first 2 lessons.

went for a holiday with my family.
we went with a tour, with only 6 people including my family hahaha.
gonna summarise this post as much as i can!
(difficult task for me since i'm a very lor sor person)

day 1 - flight & dinner.

but there is no motivation, though there are inspiring people.

14th december; kitty outing part I (weekly affair renamed?)
finally an outing since our may bbq!
it's been 7 months. O.O
anyway, the schooling people aka seok and i reached the earliest and went shopping at daiso while waiting for the rest to come after 1 hour hahaha.
my one and only mid-sem test paper ended that day!

oh oh, i was supposed to look for seok in the shop and i saw yongen instead!
then we kept bumping into her at daiso after that. hehe.
and talked to lilin over yongen's phone!
such a cedarian day, i like! (:
i suddenly miss the word cedarian so much, we don't get to hear it everyday now. ):

after dinner, we went to chill and hang out.

how i received support and encouragement when it comes to band.
the teachers with their endless naggings along with motivation.
(it's sad cos now majority of the motivation comes from within myself)
without the people around me, i wouldn't had known what to do.
i smile when i read the notes of encouragement i received from different people.
and laugh too cos they're supposed to be silly enough to cheer people up. (:

no doubt cedar days are still the best days of my (school) life.

8th december; dinner with the gossip 4 & riverdance!
spent my birthday chionging hr project in school from 11am to 3pm.
and spent the first 6 hours of it chionging club & resort assignment.
well, the grades better be good like how i so amazingly topped the class for accounting mid-sem test paper last year. (YES ACCOUNTING, and i clinched the bottom postition for the next test how ironic)

finally met livia and madeline after idk how long.
even though it was for quite a short while but better than nothing.

then we separated.
we should meet againnn, but next year already. \:
yaju and i went for riverdance musical at mbs theatre.

helix bridge, first time crossing eh!
that time during my yog duty bringing my principal to mbs we had to walk on the road beside it cos it was closed for yog closing ceremony.

my first ever musical. it was awesome!
(although it made me $70 (student price already) poorer but worth it)
enjoyed it, been waiting for them to come since 2006!!! (:
probably it's the venue too, it doesn't make it seem as wow as i expected.
btw, the percussionist is even more awesome!!! <3
love how he multi-tasks and play everything damn imba-ly.

so that was how i spent my birthday.
projects & dinner & riverdance.
at least i ended it with something good! (:

11th december; impromptu aunty cum voucher dinner.
main purpose of meeting: use mr bean voucher which expires in 2 days.
to make things more worthy, i decided to use my Manhattan fish market voucher too!

mr bean ice cream! save $0.50 also happy. HAHA.

went to nex after that cos christine wanted to explore.

23rd november; tanah merah country club field trip
we had our first class 'outing' aka club & resorts field trip.
it was pretty fun, given that there was no lecture and tutorial for the week :D

awesome place with lan computers, pool table, table-soccer, wii etc.

the last one was the meiden one we went for after sibf in july, i think?

2nd november; dinner with regina and silin @ jurong point
we finally met after months!
had dinner at benten. (jap food lol)
then we took neoprint for cheap thrill!

this machine used to be our best friend.
we can take neoprints up to 5 times a week after band practices!
i still have the neoprint book i pasted all the neoprints into.
those were the days..
i miss those cedar band days, sigh.

this post is so emotional.
too much thoughts are running through my head i can't list all into words.
and i guess they will only happen in my dreams.

i envy the band life that they have.
i admire their perseverance skills and never-good-enough attitude.
i would love to experience this kind of band life.
i want to watch all japan band competition live at least once in my life.
(this is not part of dreaming, i will make it come true)

the way they make decisions as a band.
the way they encourage each other in order to achieve the same goal.
the way they are taught, musically and in life.
the amount of hard work and determination they are willing to put in for the gold.
i really really really take my hats off to them, and bow till my head hits the floor.

i'm glad i had a chance to meet meiden.
one of the greatest thing that happened in my life.
given that i'm a japanese band scene fan...

"There is no perfection in music.
Therefore, it pursues it more.
I want to do music that they are made to be impressed more."
- these lines from hayato inspired me.

though i have almost given up on the singapore band culture, maybe i should live in self-denial and be happy in my own little bubble world.
the more you picture the perfect outcome, the more frustrated you get.
and then you give up, and join the dark side.

i miss the feeling of working towards a common goal as a band.
and the days when we shed tears of disappointment and joy.
it reminded me of the past few syfs we attended.
and probably the next coming one.
原来我始终还是放不下。

on a side note: tonight is over.
still deep in thoughts but...
i shall focus on jap oral after i wake up.

i don't seem to be as happy playing now.
i don't seem to be as excited for practices now.
i think differently when i listen to band music now.
so, what is band to me now?

gotta do some soul-searching after my jap exams.
and get myself down to practising my strokes all over again.
(confirm can't do my strokes properly now already)
i don't want the passion to die just like that.

looking forward to sws practices now.
the people. the songs. the full section and its percussive sound.

life is always good.
if you don't think too much into it.

first week of school.

i know a few other people in the class too though.

and will continue for the next 12 weeks.
cos our subjects are currently electives, they're mostly 100% coursework! :D
(although it also means projects and more projects)
mid-sem test with only 1 paper. heh.
and i think i'll enjoy the subjects cos i chose them. (:

i felt that i changed.
i talked more in class. (in a contributing way hor)
not as introverted as previous semester, ha!

probably due to the yog experience and the temp hr admin job over the holidays.
these 2 experiences required lots of contact with people everyday.
oh, and i miss yog! the liaison officer days. ):
i think i want to be a LO again if there're anymore chances!

had last minute work in the morning at bedok south sec.

then all of us met at clementi.

singaporeans are damn freeeee, they have so much time to queue for such things.
i usually won't queue unless i feel like it.

2nd october; impulse trip to bedok 85 for ba chor mee!
after jap lesson, cow and i wanted to hunt for food at bedok interchange...
but after we reached, we had the impulse to head for bedok 85 instead!

ba chor mee + ice milo! (both also nice)

30th september; sws practice
it was the best band practice i've had since july.
nice & challenging repertoire, full section (almost, only missing fhairil).
i haven't heard the sound of a full percussion section for damn damn damn long.
so it felt really good.

hopefully beautiful sunday's gonna be a good one. (:
looking forward to jan 2011.
(when i'm gonna get busy with concerts after coming back from japan)

25th september; cousin's housewarming @ pinnacle
went up to sky garden!
as of now, i've conquered all the 3 tallest attractions of singapore! (:
- singapore flyer, marina bay sands sky park & pinnacle's sky garden.

warning: ranting ahead.

i'm sick and tired of all these.
the evolving band culture here.
few years ago: full attendance used to be the norm.
now: poor attendance is the norm and full attendance is an occasion worth celebrating with champagne.
are small bands/ensembles the trend here now?

it's very tiring to go for practices with only 10 people.
we made the effort to go, but others weren't bothered.
how do you think we feel?
although i kinda enjoyed last week's lunch with half the 'band'.
i'm getting disheartened and slowly letting things go.

3 to 4 years ago, things weren't like this in any band i was involved in.
and now, there're countless. (exception probably only to most school bands)
that's why i still prefer school band life.
after being exposed to so much outside band life, although i got to learnt a lot of things, nothing still beats the fun during school band days.

there's nothing to look forward to during band practices now.
hopefully the upcoming john williams beautiful sunday with mr oura will be good.
although i already missed the first practice due to unforeseen circumstances.
i wanted to gooo! i was actually looking forward to practice. ):
john williams. ♥

may things get better before i really give up hope.
i need to get the band feel back. sigh.

volunteers & workforce got free admission to uss on a few assigned nights.
i'm glad mine was on a friday!
if not i don't know how i'm gonna have the mood to wake up for work next morning.

i only met one guy from black team and a few LOs for the whole night.
OH, i met 2 jalan besar stadium venue protocol officers!
nice, they still recognise me. (okay duh, i was at their venue every night throughout the whole of yog hahaha)

this time it was held at christine's house.
and we went for prata before our meeting cos we were all famished by then.

3 1/2 days out of 11 days planned for itinerary - or rather tokyo days.
this is a BIG project for us. (a heavy investment one too)
can't wait for meetings! :D

i had post-yog syndrome.
wah so it was post-syndrome after post-syndrome brought over from july.
no wonder i had no mood to study for main exams during the 1 week study break.

2nd sept; belated teachers' day visit back to cedar
i went back to cedar with bao! (impromptu)
it was a post-teachers' day visit.
but just nice when we went back, mrs woo and ms begam were on mc. -.-
so only got to meet han laoshi.

it was good enough, had an entertaining chat with her. (:
it brought back so much memories of our chinese lessons.
i got reminded that i cried on the express chinese results day! HAHA.
almost forgot about it until she mentioned and i forgot whether i cried.
and her slamming the board cos our class didn't do well like she expected us to.
wow those were the days.
she was still the same anyway, she and bao squabbling away is hilarious! :D

volunteering for yog was a very very awesome experience for me.
honestly, i was scared at first cos it seemed like a pretty stressful and demanding job.
i'm the youngest in my team, my leader said he was worried about me initially too.
and they tried to help me/us as much as possible along the way!
kudos to them if not i wouldn't have known what to do at crucial times.

i met awesome people from all walks of life.
i gained much insight about the sports world and the organising of things.
i talked to so many people per day, regardless to seek help or casual chats.
(at venues, LOs usually gather themselves together to chat)

actually i'm quite amused by what i'd accomplished over the 2 weeks.
i didn't regret being part of this yog, the once in a lifetime experience.
down the years, these yog memories will stay with me. (:

we had a talk by hossan leong in the afternoon.

most probably will be on a yog hiatus for up to 27th august - my last day of duty.
unless something worth blogging comes by in the midst of the games.

duty hours start as early as 7am and end as late as 11pm.
if i'm lucky on some days, i may be able to attend band practices.
it's like a band hiatus too. ):
no social activity during this period too.
and no studying. (ha, isn't it supposed to be extended study break?!)
luckily i only have 2 papers. if not i'm gonna die with only 1 week to study.

so it's goodbye blogging world.
(although i may pop by to update on the following 2 days - yog torch relay @ tp and cedar percs dinner)
hopefully yog will be a fun and worthy experience for me.

25th july (part II); farewell party & airport send-off

i still remember the way zul asked to take photo, act japanese like what we did 2 years ago in japan! with the accent we naturally adopt after the exchange.

we decided to spam jump shots.

but i'm gonna miss all the times we had together, from 2008 till now.
i'm gonna work very very very hard from now to achieve my goals!

25th july (part I); Meiden.Meridian.Moichido part IV
(i just realised it has been exactly a week!)
mjcsb combined concert with aichi meiden high school band.
i slept at 6am collating the hrm report and writing the meiden letters.
woke up at about 11am to prepare to go to mj.
i'm amazed i survived the day.

after hearing for 6 years (since 2006) i'm still not sick of their deep purple medley.
i still remember i first heard it in mj hall in 2006!
went for the meiden meridian voyage concert with siying and queenie and we totally got blasted off our chairs for the first time.
super impressive and everything that we wanted to die.
i didn't thought that i'd be exchanging with them in the future.
and now we met 4 batches of people, and hopefully more to come! :D :D
of course to keep in touch with all. (:

i just found out i have super many photos for the last day.

i'm getting very tired after highing for probably 6 hours with christine.
and waking up at 8am for yog training.

anyway today was a happy happy day. (:
many good things happened since morning.
it was a happening training. learnt alot from it.

23rd july; singapore international band festival (sibf) & meiden in concert
day 3:
french tutorial in the morning.
mid-afternoon went to meet the rest for early dinner at causeway point before sibf.

it was a bad start to green bushes.
everything felt so impromptu!
after that was spartacus, things got better..
i like the grandioso part! (:

so we chionged down to SCH for meiden's concert.
managed to get a cab the moment we got out of trcc.
BUT! the driver had super bad service, he didn't know where's SCH.
we ended up alighting at the other side of tanjong pagar mrt.
and then RAN all the way to SCH in heels.
it was interval time.

cow told us the first half was awesome.
missed it! but they played most of the songs from first half again at MMM IV.
there were no more seats so we sat upstairs, vip seats with all the jap people/parents?
but the view was super bad, can't see anything!!!
cow, val and i ended up kneeling over the ledge watching the concert.
furthermore, 2nd half was the gimmicks section.

i miss hearing them play songs from 2008.
there were a few from 2008 - deep purple medley (the best since 2006), disco party, saturday night, olympics.
nothing has changed other than the people.
it was super nostalgic.
especially when they sang cosmos! ♥

shoko and hayato were damn zai, the whole bus was sleeping except them.
they were busy camwhoring also hahaha.
